An odd, sad bit...half of those drivers perished in racing accidents. Roland Ratzenberger at Imola the day before Senna in 94, and Scott Brayton at Indy in 96.

I didn't get to see some of the pictures because after I saw the Martini livery, I fainted.

I went on New Years Day. I was going to photodump yesterday but I lack the bandwidth to upload more than 2 photos at a time. Are you from Raleigh?

I'm in between Durham and Chapel Hill...Durham address.

Next question, Mopar fan? Based on user name and such...

Of the big 3, yeah Mopar for the older stuff. I prefer Ford these days as far as new stuff goes. I inherited a 65 Dart with a Slant 6, so I guess I was born into liking mopar (not really, it was my great Grandmother's).

Not a big muscle guy. I DD a Saab wagon (5 speed of course).

We've got a couple 68 B Bodies...one Hemi car one 383 car. I dig the Saab thing though.

I visited back in October, nothing prepares you for walking in and seeing a 959 and a Carrera GT in the same room. You took no pictures of it, but I assume you saw the Berlin Rom Racer.

Absolutely.

And I took pictures, just didn't post. Posted up about 35 of the 250 I shot that day. Tried to include a decent variety...and try to have a little ability involved.

My grandpa has a 66' Belvedere II with a 383 that is un-restored and in perfect condition. He bought it in 1986 and hasn't moved it from his basement since. He says he's going to get around to showing it soon but he's said that for about 7 years now (28 now, only asked him about it 7 ago).

That's the only other Mopar in the family. And sadly my mom is saying the Dodge has to go when I go to college.

Oh man. The Hemi car is a Charger, dad's had it since 72. Its original but not running. 383 car is a Super Bee, with a crappy repaint before we got it.

Those are both back in the midwest though...I didn't get to bring any old stuff with me when I moved down.

There's talk of an "open hood" weekend at the end of the month. It seems like another opponaut may be coming in for it, and I'm planning on attending.

The first two open hoods were for Museum members only; my wife and I are members but I missed 'em both. First one I was out of town on business; 2nd one I was at the hospital with my wife after she had some surgery. Hoping they'll do a third open hood...

As a Museum "member" I went the very first day it opened, the 'members only' day. Quite amazing. When you went did they still have the two cars outside by the walkway into the building?

I am definately interested. I live in Columbia, SC and was planning on making the trip up but was wanting to do it in my new ride, which arrives this week. So the timing would be perfect if it was the 24-27th as someone else has said.

Go to Charlotte on I-77, take I-85 north, exit onto I-485, go to 2nd exit for NC 49 and turn left. I'm not sure how it's signed, either east/north. 49 is mostly a two lane road, not too twisty but wayyyy more entertaining than I-85. At Asheboro take US 64 east. Stay on 64 east until it merges w/ US 1 north. Stay on US 1 into Raleigh; exit at Wade Avenue. Turn left at the light. Next exit on Wade is Blue Ridge Rd. Turn left. Museum is less than half a mile on the right. This routing will actually not cost you any significant time as 49/64 is about 14 miles shorter than I-85/I-40....and the construction on I-85 north of Charlotte can be brutal not to mention the 25 miles of two lane from there to China Grove...

much more entertaiing that coming up via Florence. Plus should be a good work out for the new girl.

I-20 via Florence is actually my usual way to get to Columbia or the south side of Atlanta etc...because I detest I-85 with a roaring passion. I-95 sucks out loud but I-85 across SC and north Georgia is hellish with truckers due to the rolling terrain.

Another option which is about as fast is to go east on I-20 to Camden and pick up US1 north...it's not a bad drive at all.

Hey, if anyone goes to this, and they have the 904/6 open, I would love a picture of the serial number plate. It may be difficult/impossible to do this because of where the plate is located in relation to how the car sits. If it can be done, I would expect the plate to be on the frame on the driver's side right behind the passenger compartment.

When I was in High School, I worked at an independent Porsche shop. There was one customer that had several cars, an amazing 356 cabrio, a Gemballa slant nose cabrio, and a 906 (The body was the 904 GTS, but with an H6) - the serial number on that car was 906-12. I am just wondering if the 904 at the museum is identified as a 904 or a 906.

If anyone goes to this, notice on the older race cars how the frames are reinforced. The 906 that I saw as a kid used fiberglass at the frame joints. It is kind of amazing how race cars were put together back then. Little thought to safety, but any way to save weight was key.
